South Korea’s Hwang Dae-Heon and Choi Min-Jeong, who each won Olympic gold in Beijing, were given free fried chicken for life as a reward for their achievements during the Winter Games.
Chicken tycoon Yoon Hong-Geun promised a “chicken pension” if the short track speed skaters brought home gold from China.
Yoon is in a position to deliver on his promise, as head of the South Korean delegation and owner of Genesis BBQ, one of South Korea’s largest fried chicken franchises.
In a ceremony to honor the South Korean short track speed skaters Choi Min-Jeong and Hwang Dae-Heon, each were given free chicken for life. The company pledged they would receive 30,000 won (or $24) each day to spend at the restaurant until their 60th birthdays.
“As a chicken lover, it offered me great support and I would like to thank the chairman for delivering on his promise,” Hwang said at a ceremony organized by Genesis BBQ and the Korea Skating Union.
After training hard, Choi said she would often share fried chicken with her teammates. Fried chicken is a popular dish in South Korea, and it’s believed that almost a third of the country’s poultry is fried.
“I sincerely thank the chairman for allowing me to feel such happiness for the rest of my life,” she stated.
Yoon had made the pledge to cheer up the athletes after the South Korean skaters were involved in an officiating controversy at the Olympics.
Genesis BBQ said Olympic silver medalists will receive a coupon twice a week for 20 years, and bronze medalists twice a week for 10 years.
