(ATR) Games organizers on Tuesday outlined selection criteria and requirements for applicants to design a replacement for the logo scrapped following a plagiarism scandal.
The 19-person committee tasked with finding a new emblem met in Tokyo today. In a bid to avoid a repeat of mistakes made in selection of the previous emblem after allegations it resembled the logo of a Belgian theatre, the panel released keywords for the concept, a six-point selection criteria, advice for applicants and the timetable for the process.
Applicants are being asked to come up with a design inspired by keywords such as ‘the power of sport’, ‘inclusivity’ and ‘recovery, reconstruction’, a reference to the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
Tokyo 2020 issued what they termed “potential” selection criteria, with the final list to be confirmed likely next week.
The logo committee said “designs should be able to elicit empathy with a large number of people” and be “highly original or distinctive” emblems worthy of serving as symbols of the Olympics.
Games organizers also want scaleable designs that retain their impact when used in different forms of media, licensed products and promotional materials.
The design competition is open to Japanese nationals or foreign nationals resident in the country aged 18 or over “regardless of previous experience or formal qualifications”. Group entries are also invited to submit one set of emblem designs for the Olympics and another for the Paralympics.
This isa major change from the previous logo competition, which was only opened to professional designers who had won at least one or two awards.
The logo competition will be formally launched next week. Organizer have set a Dec. 7 deadline for submissions.
The winning emblem will be announced in the spring.
