The UN said that if the war continues, Ukraine will lose 18 years of economic development.

UN, 16 March According to an estimate published on Tuesday by the UN program that states that if the war in Ukraine continues, up to 90% of the population may be in poverty or lose 18 years of economic development at risk of falling into poverty in the next 18 months, according to an estimate published on Tuesday by the UN program for development (UNDP).
These predictions, first published by the UNDP on the impact of the conflict, indicate that almost a third of Ukrainians will be able to live below the poverty line for 14 times more than expected without war next year.
In addition, UNDP, which has a significant presence in Ukraine, says that another 62% of the country may have a high risk of falling into poverty.
According to the study, if the war continues, 18 years of socio-economic progress could be lost.
“The need for immediate humanitarian assistance to Ukrainians is paramount, but the serious development impact of the long-term conflict is becoming more evident,” said UNDP manager Achim Steiner in a statement.
Therefore, in parallel with the already ongoing humanitarian response, the UN organization insists on the need for specific assistance so that the Ukrainian government can continue to provide basic services to the population.
UNDP recalls that, according to estimates from the Kiev administration, infrastructure worth at least $100 billion has already been destroyed, including roads, bridges, hospitals or schools.
Moreover, due to the war, half of the country’s enterprises were closed, and the rest were operating much below normal capacity.
To mitigate the impact on the population, the UNDP study proposes possible measures, such as a program to transfer money to those who need it most.
According to the document, a budget of about 250 million dollars a month could partially cover the loss of income of 2.6 million people who are expected to fall into poverty.
On the other hand, he estimates that it would cost about $430 million a month to temporarily provide a basic income scheme of $5.50 per person per day.
