Team Australia has named aerial skier Laura Peel and figure skater Brendan Kerry as the flag bearers on Friday for the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Winter Games.

They will be the first duo to carry the flag with Kerry being the first figure skater Australia has ever chosen to carry the flag.

“I was absolutely speechless when I was told I was going to be a flag bearer,” said Kerry. “It was the biggest shock and I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. I am honored.”

Kerry is an eight-time Australian men’s figure skating champion and will be competing in his third Olympic Games. His mother Monica MacDonald competed in ice dancing at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.

Peel will also be competing in her third Olympic Games. She is a two-time World Champion and finished fifth in women’s aerials in PyeongChang 2018.

“It’s really hard to put into words how it feels to be selected as flag bearer for this incredible team,” said Peel. “It’s such an honor and I’m truly grateful and so humbled to be able to lead the team into the Opening Ceremony. Honestly, it feels like a dream.”

“Growing up I dreamed of being an Olympian and it’s always so special to pull on the green and gold. Being a flag bearer is beyond anything I ever dreamed of.”

Fourteen Australians have carried the flag previously, starting with men’s ice hockey player Vic Ekberg at Squaw Valley in 1960.
