STOCKHOLM (AP) — A student killed two female teachers at a high school in southern Sweden, police reported Tuesday.
The 18-year-old student was arrested at the crime scene on Monday in Malmo, Sweden’s third city. The victims were two women over the age of 50, police said.
The suspect had no criminal record, and the police did not reveal how the teachers died. The reason has not been determined.
“It’s not yet time to talk about it,” Malmo Police Chief Petra Stenkula said at a press conference.
He said the officers arrived at the Latin School in downtown Malmo 10 minutes after receiving the alert and found the suspect and the two victims on the third floor. The situation was “controlled,” he added.
Stenkula did not confirm a report in the Aftonbladet newspaper that the student himself called the authorities to say that he had killed two people, had left his weapons on the ground and was on the third floor.
The police made “seizures”, and a forensic examination “will allow us to better understand what happened,” Stenkula said. He added that there were no news of other victims.
The police said they were called at 5.12 in the afternoon. Dozens of ambulances and patrols went to the school, and armed police entered the building that was cordoned off.
The school has about 1,100 students, some of whom had gathered to work on a musical play and locked themselves in classrooms.
Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said she learned of the event “with sadness and dismay,” according to Swedish news agency TT.
All classes were suspended and the school was closed.
The murders took place in a modern annex to the school, founded in 1406 when the pope issued a letter of privilege for its construction and operation. At first he educated local youth on Christian doctrine and Latin language.
