Debanhi Escobar: CNB questioned the actions of the Prosecutor's Office in the case of the young woman

After the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Nuevo León confirmed that the body they found inside a cistern belonged to Debanhi Escobar, a young man who disappeared since April 9, the National Search Commission (CNB) questioned the “interpretation of the law” of the regional authorities.

Karla Quintana Osuna, head of the Commission, assured that the FGE hides itself in “a misinterpretation of the law” in order not to give information about the case of the 18-year-old girl. However, he noted that the Regiomontana Prosecutor’s Office is a clear example of the failed autonomy of the authorities, due to lack of coordination.

“This is a problem that is repeated and that we have been talking about for more than a year: there is a misunderstood autonomy on the part of the prosecutors, they hide themselves in a misinterpretation of the law so as not to share information with anyone,” he said in an interview with journalist Elisa Alanís.

Quintana Osuna also said she witnessed the “lack of information” in Debanhi’s case, since, according to her statements, Mario Escobar, the girl’s father, “was not given copies of the file.”

“Nuevo León is one of the top five states with the most historically disappeared women and girls, and this corresponds to the same pattern throughout the country: adolescents aged 13, 14 and 16 and young women,” he explained about the situation in the northern state.

It was on the afternoon of Friday, April 22, when the Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the body found in a cistern located inside the Nueva Castilla Motel belonged to Debanhi Escobar.

“Having found the body of a lifeless person within the search area of Debanhi Susana Escobar Bazaldúa, scientific evidence allows us to report that the body found is Debanhi Susana, the cause of death being the deep contusion of the skull,” confirmed Gustavo Adolfo Guerrero Gutiérrez, head of the FGE, in a video spread on social networks.

Likewise, he confirmed that, despite having made the finding after 13 days in which authorities, groups, family members and friends participated in the search “at this time no line of investigation is ruled out in this case”, so investigations will continue to clarify the reasons that led to the death of the young law student.

Prior to the confirmation, in an interview with Telediario Monterrey, the Deputy Public Prosecutor of Nuevo León, Luis Enrique Orozco, confirmed that Debanhi’s body was handed over to his relatives during the afternoon of Friday, April 22, 2022, after carrying out the corresponding analyzes at the facilities of the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo).

For his part, the regional governor Samuel García urged the FGE to make public the investigation folder for the case of Debanhi Escobar because he said he did not know the contents of it.

“I am the governor of the state and I don’t know the beggar folder. I want to know what happened, how it helped. Then, with total prudence, ask the Prosecutor’s Office to make known what happened and we will be watching from the (Government) Palace,” said the state president inside the Carmen Chapel prior to the funeral of the young woman.
